BYOD

BYOD

X BYOD

I am always intrigued with solutions that will save enterprises money, and also satisfy end-users. Many organizations have migrated to BYOD, but this can be problematic for enterprises with a limited technology budget or staff. Imagine a hand full of people trying to support every hardware type and configuration. Then ask yourself what's installed on these systems that have the potential to affect your corporate infrastructure.

I have never been a fan of BYOD for this reason. While corporate policy can dictate the usage of corporate assets, it's impossible to do this with a user’s personal computer. Allowing a user to connect a system, and not knowing the security posture of that system, is playing Russian roulette with your infrastructure. There is also the question of disaster recovery with BYOD. If the users system crashes or gets stolen, how do you recover proprietary information? If the user leaves your organization, are you able to recovery your data on personal computers?

My opinion is that virtual desktops are the way to go. They allow users to use their personal computers, and an environment that is controlled and managed by corporate policy. While there are some concerns that will need to be addressed, I believe that there are so many potential benefits to this concept.
